What is involved with a firefighter's auxiliary and what legal guidelines are there?

My husband is our local firefighter's union president and a firefighter, of course. He works very hard and seldom has free time due to the commitments involved. There is currently no involvement from the wives, girlfriends, or mothers of our firefighters and I would like to start something for us to help with fundraisers and events. I have been searching for good fundraisers and the best ways to help, but have come up with only bits and pieces. Can anyone tell me if an auxiliary is the best way to go and an idea of how to start and what is involved if so?
