Is it worth majoring in music?

When I go to college, I want to major in music, maybe even go and get a doctorate in it. But, my mom says that I will not be successful in life and never make any money and be like that guy in the movie, "The Soloist" and live on the streets playing piano for tips. She doesn't believe that I can be successful because of, not being racist, the asian kids who are my age already playing late Beethoven sonatas and crazy Liszt stuff. Do you think that it is worth majoring in music even with the interest in clical music is declining? Do you think that there's any way convincing my mom who wants me to become a doctor when I grow up that I can be successful in music?
