Holocaust Question Help?

How and why did good people stand by as horrible deeds were committed against people in their community? For example, many Germans watched as Jewish neighbours were undermined and abused as their freedoms were stripped away. What examples can YOU think of today where people do nothing while bad things are happening to others? i want to know your honest opinions.
